Admission Requirements

In order to participate in one of our summer schools, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old at the start of the programme
  • Where applicable, meet pre-requisites for chosen programme (not applicable in 2022)
  • Be in good academic standing and on track to pass year 1 of studies
  • If you come from a country where English is not an official language then you will need to provide proof of your language ability

Students studying on a Lancaster University degree with one of our partners:

  • Are automatically eligible for enrolment based on English requirements and do not need to provide language qualifications to apply

Language requirements for students from non-English speaking countries

All students on summer schools must have a good level of English to ensure they can participate fully and have a quality experience. We, therefore, require students who come from a country where English is not an official language to submit evidence of suitable English Language qualifications. Proof of any of the following will be accepted*:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component
  • College English Test (CET) level 4: 530
  • College English Test (CET) level 6: 493
  • Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels B2-C1
  • Lancaster English Proficiency form completed by staff at your home university. (Email to ask for a form.)

*We will accept any language qualification that is internationally recognised and at a level that is equivalent to the standards above

To apply, you will need a copy of your official university transcript and may need proof of your English proficiency. You do not need to apply if your home university is submitting a group application on your behalf. Please check with your home university if you think this might apply to you.

Application deadline: Wednesday 20 April 2022.

Once you submit your application form, we aim to assess the form within two weeks. You will then be sent an offer letter with a link to pay the programme fee. Once we have received payment, we will issue you with a visa letter and information on how to apply for a visa.

You do not need to apply for accommodation, this is included in the summer school package.

Approximately one month before you arrive, we will send you an email with further information about the programme and arrivals details. If you have any questions, please check the Frequently Asked Questions page or email us.

Here, you can see the summer school fees 2022 and how they are comprised of tuition and accommodation costs. Students are expected to pay the overall fee in one lump sum before arriving in the UK. Summer School fees consist of tuition and accommodation costs.

The 2022 tuition fees are: 10 credits / 3 US / 6 ECTS £1,273 15 credits / 4 US / 7.5 ECTS £1,911

The 2022 catered accommodation fees are: 3 weeks £1,444

The accommodation fees include a catered ensuite single room on campus with most meals provided during the summer schools. Meals are not provided when away from campus during scheduled overnight trips, e.g. London. If you are staying away from Lancaster University as part of the scheduled programme, then the accommodation facilities will vary.

If you study at one of our partner institutions, then you may be eligible for a scholarship. If you are unsure if this applies to you then contact us.

There will also be optional workshops and other resources where you can reflect on your own cultural background and explore new perspectives.

As well as academic content, the summer schools offer a range of opportunities for you to make friends, try new skills, and travel the UK.

  • The Lake District
  • York

Please note that some trips will be at an additional cost.

Evening activities

We run regular social activities in the evenings for you to relax and make friends with students from across the summer schools. For larger groups, there will often be choices of activities between sports, games, or cultural activities. Here are some examples from previous years:

  • Play cricket, frisbee, netball, basketball or football
  • Play strategy board games
  • Tour Lancaster Castle 
  • Watch British films or theatre
  • Bake delicious treats
